Over the past year, Spiars Engineering has partnered with My Possibilities, a local non-profit that is expanding in more ways than one. My Possibilities serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), such as Down Syndrome, Autism, Asperger’s, Prader-Willi, and traumatic brain injuries.
Like many movements towards change, the idea of My Possibilities began with the hope of meeting a need. In 2007, a group of parents realized their kids with IDDs had no programs or facilities available to continue their education after high school. Within a year, these same parents brought a community together behind this unaddressed need. Over the last decade, the Plano-based organization has become a pioneer in vocational education for adults with IDDs by implementing the first full-day, full-year educational program of its kind. By providing vocational skills, socialization opportunities, trade skills, and independent living skills, My Possibilities has worked to become the leader and benchmark for continuing education to HIPsters (Hugely Important People).
Now, as My Possibilities grows in numbers, it is ready to expand the opportunities it can provide. For the first time in American History, adults with cognitive disabilities are outliving their parents, creating a nationwide need for independent living communities. Hoping to meet that need, My Possibilities sought to acquire Eastern Hills Country Club, South Garland’s overgrown and abandoned golf course and country club, and fully convert the site into a development of 300 new homes – a third of which would be owned by My Possibilities. This community will help prepare adults with IDDs for independent living by giving them a place to call their own, complete with on site and on call nursing, security, basic landscaping, walking trails, swimming pool access, and other amenities. This dream became a reality on September 28th when the property was purchased for My Possibilities through a generous donor.
The development will redeem acres of unused land in hopes of forming a unique and necessary community, and Spiars Cares wanted to be a part of that. Spiars Engineering chooses to serve our communities by dedicating a portion of our resources to bless others in need. In this year alone, Spiars Engineering has donated it’s planning, surveying, zoning, and design services to My Possibilities. As the project moves forward, Spiars will continue to help My Possibilities plan and build the community they envision for their clients. Together, My Possibilities, Spiars Engineering and countless other generous organizations, will build something permanent; an example for living communities for adults with IDDs around the country.
